| In the 1890s The Harmsworth Magazine published an article called 'The Cost of an Artificial Man' which looked at damages awards for facial and limb injuries. The author concluded:
"A comparison between the cost of an artifical outfit and the sum total of damages payable for the loss of the corresponding members shows a very handsome profit margin."
This greeting card reproduces one of the illustrations that accompanied the article. It shows that the loss of an eye, for instance, would have secured average compensation in the courts of 200 whereas a pair of glass eyes could be bought at the time for just 2, 2s 0d. Quite a business opportunity!
The card is on high quality stock, and provided with a coloured envelope inside a clear acetate sleeve.
